Road to Hana in Maui

When you go to Maui you have to take the road to Hana, one of the most popular day trips on Maui is a trip on the Road to Hana. Hana is a super small town that takes hours to get to but you don't go to see the town, you go to enjoy the scenery along the way. Along Maui's rugged eastern coastline is the peaceful town of Hana, considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers. The legendary road to Hana is only 52 miles from Kahului, however the drive can take hours to complete since it's fraught with narrow one-lane bridges, hairpin turns and incredible island views. The Hana Highway has 600 curves and 54bridges. The road leads you through flourishing rainforests, flowing waterfalls, plunging pools and dramatic seascapes.

So all along we had plans to take this road to Hana. When we got there (Maui) we went to this place to get some info about things we wanted to do while in Maui. One activity was taking a tour to Hana. We thought why spend the money when we can just drive but they talk us into it and another couple there even talked us into it. They said the road is so crazy that Aaron won't get to enjoy it all because he has to really watch the road and the tour guide will tell us so much more then we found figure out on our own. They said most people who attempt to drive it turn around after a few hours and just come back. They warned us it has 600 curves, narrow one-lane bridges, hairpin turns and 54 bridges. Since Hana is a must see we decided to take the tour and we were so glad we did. It was a long day (11 hours) and drive, during the drive we were so glad we chose the tour. Even though I have gone now, if I went back I would still take the tour and not drive.

1st stop on the road to Hana. These trees were so weird, they look painted on and almost had a camo look.

This stop had so many beautiful views

Our tour guy picking flowers for us to smell, they smelled so good!

3rd stop - I loved watching the waves crash on these rocks

me holding coconut husk

weird spider
baby coconut

Some locals hunt wild boars

snack stop, this snow cone was soooo good!
water dripping down a side of a mountain
the first waterfall we stopped at

Half way through the drive we stopped at Black Sand beach and had a picnic lunch and then went swimming in the ocean. It was a nice break from the ride and it was so fun to get out and get wet. The beach was black lava rocks, it was hard to walk in we would sink in the ground.

Our tour guide said he wanted to show us red sand real fast so we pulled over to the small beach. I walked in it for a bit, I was shocked how soft it was since we just left the rough black sand beach.

We stopped at a road ship flower shop, they were so pretty and cheap. I wish we could get these flowers back home for their low price. A bouquet was only $4

Another waterfall, this one was my favorite!

Back road to Hana was so dead looking
tour guide told us locals do this to bless certain spots

The road to Hana is so narrow if you leave a car on the road there is no where for it to go so people will just destroy it if you leave it. Tour guide said....This truck broke down, the next day the tires were gone and the day after it was striped and then someone caught it on fire. Crazy!
