First we looked around at the plantation store, we had to buy Apple Bananas. So cute and small and yummy!
As we were about to take a plantation tour it started to rain hard. We still went on the tour because the trolley was covered.
Sunday came and we weren't sure what we should do. We thought a drive would be nice. We decided to check out Haleakala crater which is a volcano. Stretching across Maui’s southern and eastern coastline, Haleakala National Park is home to Maui's highest peak. Rising 10,023 feet above sea level, Haleakala can be seen from just about any point on the island. As we drove up and the higher we got it was like our view from the plane when we flew in. It was also getting colder and colder. At first the drive is pretty tropical mixed with forest looking. It was so pretty. The long, winding road to the summit of Haleakala takes some time to drive up, but is well worth the effort and a much easier drive then Hana. They say you’ll discover more endangered species here than any other park in the National Park Service.
We are starting to drive through clouds. When we did our windshield got wet like it was sprinkling but our top was down and we never felt rain.
These are the Nene birds
At one of the visitor center stops
Almost to the top
At the top, it was so cold. It was in the 50's which was a big change from the bottom of this crater.
At the top. In the distance is the big Island (Hawaii)
It was so weird to see the clouds below us.
These plants looked like metal, they appeared to be silver. They looked neat. This rare species of Silversword is fragile and lives only upon the slopes of Haleakala.
This stop we couldn't see below, the clouds were too thick
Nene bird hid an egg
People ride bikes down all the time, these guys were riding skateboards, it looked fun.
