Hayden's 1st Skate Comp

The place Hayden's skates is called AZ Grind. They decided to have an in house comp and when we heard about it we were excited to be apart of it.  Hayden has been wanting to do a competition for awhile but the ones we would hear about would always be a weekend we had something planned. So this one worked out perfect. They had 3 competitions that day....mini, street and bowl.  Hayden signed up for the mini only. I kept telling him to do the bowl because I thought he did great in it.  He said no.  Days later we signed up for the bowl. I guess he started to feel confident enough to do it.

The day of, the mini comp was first.  We got there early so Hayden could practice and he wasn't doing good at all.  He kept messing up and falling. I think his nerves were getting to him.  I was getting so nervous too. I didn't expect him to win it all but I wanted him to have a good and fun experience and all I could see was this going bad.  During the comp he got to do 2 runs. Both weren't good at all.  Its like he was forgetting all his tricks.  But I tried to stay postive so he didn't freak out. Once it was over he came to sit by me and he was happy it was over and also happy for the winners since he knows most of these kids.  He was staying postive, which was good.

They then did the street comp, he didn't sign up for this so we headed to the bowl so he could practice.  I tried to help him as he practiced. He was starting to get stressed but we calmed him down. We knew we was so much better in the bowl and could really do good on this part.

Then it was bowl comp time.  He did his 2 runs and did really good.  After everyone skated they announced he won 3rd place.  We were so happy for him.  And he was sooo excited...I think more excited then the 1st and 2nd place winners.  I said to him "And you didn't want to do the bowl comp, just the mini."  He was so glad he chose to.  If he would have only done the mini like he originally planned and did poorly he would have left with a pretty crappy feeling about himself and competitions.  This way he started off bad but left a winner.  A much nicer experience. I was so glad he did the bowl.
